Cecil
Jones just turned nineteen when he signed this large
plate. He was born in
Madeley, Shropshire, England in early 1870, and likely a
first
or second year student
at nearby Coalbrookdale School of Art. The
plate has holes in the back rim for hanging.

From Potter's
Art Jones went on to receive "...several medals and an Art
Teachers' Certificate..." from Coalbrookdale. He later served as
assistant headmaster in 1911, before immigrating to
the
United States in 1913. |

Cis was
an English nickname for Cecil (usefulenglish
pdf), and
used often by Jones throughout
his
adult life. We
have even seen his nicknamed signature on late 1940s studio pottery.

From American
Art Tile we have found only one Broadmoor Pottery tile
signed in
this
manner. Most of
his hard to find Broadmoor items are simply signed "C Jones".

The
early Cecil Jones plate weighs in at three-pounds-thirteen-ounces. It
probably remained in his possession throughout his life. A long time
avid collector of his work in southern
California was the prior owner.
